I’m really curious who makes YOUR favorite longsword?
My first (steel) longsword was a pretty generic one with a disc pommel, I got from Nadler Metal Crafts. The balance was a lot better than I expected, but it was a little short. In fact it was almost exactly a centimeter too short for IMCF rules. When I learned this, I ordered a replacement from a sword maker in Novgorod, Russia, named Gryzlov. He makes superb swords for great prices… but since Russia invaded Ukraine, he has not been answering any inquiries from me.
These both handle well, especially for swords made for Buhurt, which tend to be notoriously tip- heavy. I tend to like my swords balanced close to the guard and fairly light and fast.
I’ve heard good things about a lot of other sword makes lately, too.
Specifically, Sigi Forge.
In the last year, I have had the privilege of handling a handful of longswords made by Sigi.
I fell in love.
Now, Sigi isn’t the cheapest out there, but I was impressed at the quality. These swords were light and quick and well balanced. What’s more, they are beautiful. I contacted them a little while ago about the possibility of making a “King” model longsword that has a tip that was good for both HEMA and buhurt. They’d have to kind of squish it a little to make it a little wider. (IMCF and HMB both require the tip to be rounded to a diameter of 20mm.) They said that it would be a special order but no problem to do.
So at the moment, with Gryzlov not answering messages, I think my favorite longsword is the Sigi King. I’d love to have one with a waisted grip and their faceted pommel with lines, and a 20mm tip. When I have the cash, I hope to order one. (Side note: I am open to sponsorship!)
So far, this is one I’ve fallen totally in love with and hope to acquire some day.
That said, what’s YOUR favorite? I’d love to know and I’d love to know who else is making wonderful swords these days. What do you look for in a longsword? What do you use yours for?
Let me know and maybe I’ll talk about you and your favorite sword right here.
